NDTS Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)
How is NDIC authorized to collect data through the NDTS?
Like any federal agency, NDIC must submit any data collection plan that impinges
on the public’s time to the Office of Management and Budget (OMB) for approval.
The current OMB approval for NDTS runs through February 2010.
How are NDTS results used?
The statistical estimates derived from NDTS data are used in various NDIC
intelligence products, including the National Drug Threat Assessment, which is produced
annually for use by policymakers.
NDIC also produces regional-, state-, and
market-level drug threat analyses that are in part, based on NDTS results. NDTS
results also are provided in response to requests for information that NDIC
receives from various federal, state, and local agencies. A summary of NDTS
results for 2003 through 2008, including analysis of the data, is planned for release in 2008.
Can any law enforcement agency participate in the NDTS?
Agencies are selected to participate in the NDTS according to the NDTS sampling
plan. Agencies not selected for the sample are welcome to
respond to the NDTS via paper copy; however, to ensure the accuracy of statistical
estimates based on the responses of NDTS sample agencies, non-sample responses
are not included in the calculation of weighted statistical estimates of NDTS
results. Information from non-sample responses is used to provide anecdotal
information for use by NDIC analysts in analytical products.
What kind of information is obtained through the NDTS?
The NDTS survey is designed to gather information from state and local law
enforcement agencies that can be used by NDIC to produce reports and products
that focus on strategic drug intelligence that can be used by policymakers and law enforcement
executives responsible for anti-drug programs. Please see the Survey Design section in the
NDTS Methodology tab for a detailed list of NDTS survey items.
